Unable to process latest software update

Hi - l have been trying to load the new software update for at least 7 days. It gets as far as '15 minutes left' and even 10 minutes or 5, but never gets any further than that.
What is occurring? Can anyone help please?

-Which version of OS X/macOS?
-How much free space do you have?
-When it doesn't complete, do you force power off/restart?
