I have changed my last name and I tried to just go in and change it and then tried to log back in and it wont let me. I click on login as a guest - shouldn't have - and now I can't get out of that....What do I do? I am completely locked out.

Hi and welcome,

You will need the install disk then have a look here
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1274

Hope it helps.

EDIT:

Should have added that you cannot reset the password with OS discs older or newer than the version currently on the system.

And basically this is what you

Boot Mac with the Install Disk in the drive, wait until the Apple Logo Appears, and when it boots, select your Language and click the arrow.

From the Installer Menu (Menu Bar) select Utilities>Disk Utilities and Reset Password. Now follow the prompts.
But first read the link I gave.

Thanks so much for the response. My only problem is that it is stuck in guest user mode and I can't get it out of there. Any suggestions to get it back to the regular non-guest mode?

Hi,

If you click the Apple and log out, on the new screen what options do you have?

Thats the problem. I can't click on anything. Nothing. None of the icons work. I was hoping for a "command" and something to get me out of there and back to where it was asking for my password. I can't get out of the guest user.

Hi,

OK if you are running Lion or mountain Lion try this, but passwords are very tricky and sensitive. And I have never had to do this.

1) Boot to recoverty partition (Command+R during boot)
Info here.
http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
2) Choose Terminal from the Utilities menu.
3) enter resetpassword
4) chooose your hard drive, and follow directions here:
http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/24/reset-mac-os-x-10-7-lion-password/
And here

Other option if your not happy is take in to your nearest Apple store genius bar.

So I went in under safe mode (shift during start up) and my administrator (me) came up. I took off all the passwords etc. Unclicked everything and tried to re-start it again and it goes back to the guest user screen that doesn't let me do anything. So weird. I might be forced to bring it to apple. It's 4 years old. So not under any apple care or anything. Just wish I could take back when I clicked on guest user.

Hi,

One more option if you don't mind loosing data unless backup up to time machine, would be to do a clean install of OS X.

My daughter fixed it by just doing control Q. Took me out of the guest program and everything seems to be okay. Thanks for all the suggestions. I very much appreciate the help!!

Hi,

Pleased to hear all is ok now, always thought that Command + and Q simultaneously closes all open windows and quits the program.

Never thought of using that for your issue.
