stop auto complete?

For some time I have been using a numbers spreadsheet to keep up-to-date our club membership.
Now a new member has joined and in trying to fill in all his details I have hit a complication where his wife's name is Jan but every time I type Jan it automatically auto completes to January.
How do I stop this?

You could try turning off Auto-Complete:

Preferences ~> General, deselect Show auto-completion list in table columns.

Thanks for that but I'm using Mavericks 10.9.2 and as yet Apple has not re-installed auto-complete after completely rewriting the app recently.

Hi,

Possibly type in January then delete the (unary) and it should learn this new word. So that next time you will be offered two chooses, January or Jan.

Edit Menu > Spelling and Grammer.
Also ensure the Cell Data format is set to Text not Automatic.
