Hi!

When I do a reading of broadband speed on the desktop it is:
Download speed: 23.16Mbit/s
Upload speed: 1,40Mbit/s

With my laptop in exactly the same place, I get a reading of
Download speed: 59.78 Mbit/s
Upload speed: 10.65 Mbit/s

The laptop is a MacBook Pro lees than one year old. The desktop is an iMac that is around 5 years old.

Any advice to make the desktop more efficient and have a quicker connection?

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome.

The difference in speed could be a couple of things. If they are both using Wi-Fi, then it may have to do with hardware differences in their 802.11x capabilities. Also, it may be related to the type of router being used, and what 802.11x standard the network is setup to broadcast.

If you can give us the the following information, we can probably give you a proper analysis:

-Exact model of both Macs?
-What versions of Mac OS X?
-Have you tested wired Ethernet versus wireless Wi-Fi?
-Brand/model of your router?
-What is you advertised broadband speed from your ISP?

Hi Cory!

Many thanks for the quick reply. Here's the detaisl you asked for!

iMac 27" mid 2011
OSX El Capitain version 10.11.3
Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory
4GB 1333MHz DDR3

MacBook Pro 13" 2012
OSX Yosemite
Processor: 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Wired ethernet tested on Macbook. It is 10Mbit/s quicker than when using wifi right next to the router.
At themoment the router is in the cellar, so a little difficult to test the desktop with wired connection. May try later.

Router is HG2332_EU

Advertised speed is 100Mbit/s, but at the moment there is a fair distance between th erouter and the computer. Wasn't expecting 100Mbit/s with that distance, but confused about difference between two machines equally distant from the router.
