silly question????

I'm new at this so this may be a silly question to some

I just want know is I download a movie with .AVI
do I have to convert the file before burning it to a dvd
for viewing in the family dvd player or can I leave it as
an .AVI

I'm having trouble burning it to a dvd

Which is the best program to burn with
