I have a Canon Laser printer/scanner, and always print or scan wirelessly to and from my MacBook Pro. Occasionally the printer couldn’t find my laptop but restarting the laptop usually cleared it.

After the most recent update to Sequoia 15.4.1 I cannot get the printer to connect with my MacBook. I continually get the message: ‘Cannot connect to computer’ and nothing I’ve tried has resolved the issue. I even restored the printer to factory settings and reconnected wifi, but still nothing. I can send to it from my MacBook using Airdrop, it’s just that the printer is not recognising my computer to send scans wirelessly to it.

I’m assuming that it’s probably a setting on my MacBook that needs changed but I’ve no idea where to start. Can anyone help please!

A macOS update is supposed to install updated drivers to printers that Apple supports, and I assume that yours is one of those since it was working with your previous version of macOS. But first, I suggest updating to macOS 15.5 (24F74) in case even newer drivers for your printer were included.

But short of doing a system update, you may want to try to delete and reinstall your Canon printer from System Settings since very often, that procedure works in the short run.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your reply. Following your advice, this is what I’ve tried:

1. Updated to version 15.5 - No effect.
2. Deleted the printer from my Mac in System Settings and reinstalled it - No effect.
3. Looked on the Canon website and installed the latest update, released in late April - No effect.
I notice though that it only mentioned up to 15.4.1, so maybe they’ve yet to issue an update for 15.5.

That’s the reason to use the drivers built into macOS because they are supposed to be compatible with the system software. Unless Canon has not developed a version for Sequoia 15.5, the drivers that came with Sequoia might not work either. You may have to just wait for Canon to come out with a newer version, or, at worst, downgrade Sequoia bace to 15.4.1, which can be a hassle.

I actually contacted Canon today, and went through a video call so he could see what was coming up on the printer screen. He said the update should not have caused a problem, and couldn’t find any explanation for why the printer wasn’t recognising my laptop, so he will look further into it and reply to me by email.

I’ve now had a reply from Canon, giving me various suggestions on what to try to resolve the problem. The first one was this:

1. (From your device) First make sure MF Scan Utility is completely closed.
2. Then allow apps on the local network:

Go to System Settings / Privacy & Security / Local Network - and make sure the following are on:

Canon MF Scan Agent
Canon MF Toolbox
Canon MF SU Agent
Canon MF Scan Utility
Canon MF Scanner1 (if it is there)

3. Then to try again to scan with MF Scan Utility.

I don’t have MF Toolbox in the list but there was only one unchecked box, and that was Scan Utility. When I turned that on, my computer came up again on the scanner, and I was able to scan successfully again to my laptop, so I’m guessing the last OS update turned that off.

If your ability to scan still doesn’t work, I have other suggestions I could share with you, so please let me know if the above one doesn’t resolve your issue.
