PLEASE HELP! repeatedly disappearing memory!

I have a 13" MacBook, and am running MAC OS X 10.4.11

Please Help!
When I restart my computer and open "Macintosh HD" the window says that I have 1.55 GB available. However as i use the computer, the amount of space available decreases. Sometimes quickly, Sometimes rather slowly. However, it always results in me having 0 KB of available space. Then I restart my computer and it is back around 1.5 GB! For example, while writing this post, my available space has decreased by 0.5 GB! Can anyone help?
