Photos etc missing from Desktop

I have folders on my desktop that contained misc files like 'Favourite Photos'etc. The contents of these files have disappeared since association with iCloud. The folders are there on the desktop and the file names are within them but when I click on the file name I get blank results.

Might this be something to do with iCloud? Could I disassociate my Mac from any connection to iCloud and might this help with this problem.

Hello,

Yes, it sounds like iCloud Drive > Desktop & Documents was enabled at some point. Do the files have a little cloud with download arrow on them?
