os 10.4.11 HELP !!!! Please !!!!

Everything had been melting down - applications not opening (Photoshop CS2) and other simple apps like TextEdit... then a bunch of cap "A"s in boxes all over the place!!! In the finder, in the dock...tried shutting down to reboot but all i get now is the little cog going around.

tried reinstalling the entire start up disk but it says there is a problem... wont complete it.... saying "There were errors installing software".

have tried disk utility but it says:
"Volume Bitmap needs minor repair. Volume Header needs minor repair... HFS volume checked. Volume Main Harddrive could not be repaired"

is this a system thing or do i have to bring my powerbook G4 in?? am terrified of losing all of my docs.!!! they have not been backed up.

COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED bc I used a cheap USB SD card reader yesterday????

Try to start your Mac using the installation disk. Then run Disk Utility to repair permissions and also verify disk.
