No Drop Down Menu In Display Option

I'm trying to mirror my Mac to my TV screen via Apple TV. When I go under "System Preferences/Displays" there's no drop down box to choose anything like Apple TV. I can airplay "Home Videos" from iTunes to Apple TV though.

Specs:
OS X Yosemite
10.10.5

Apple TV Gen 3

Is my system to old? Thanks in advance

Hello,

Yes, it is probably that you Mac doesn't support screen sharing via AirPlay due to age/hardware limitations, you are only running Yosemite, or that your tv 3rd Gen doesn't support it.

Thanks for the reply. I should mention its a 2009 machine. I have a 2011 machine with the same OS on it and I do have the screen sharing option. So I guess as you say its an outdated hardware issue?
