My wife's iMac's mail program doesn't have a trash folder. Her iPhone has one with trash in it (In her iCloud).

I tried creating one and deleting a message, but I have no idea where that message went to, it wasn't in this new trash folder.

My iMac has a trash folder in my iCloud and on my Mac and and "All Trash" folder in my favorites.

I've been searching settings, searching the web, and not finding what I need to do to get it back.

Any ideas?

Assuming that you are using Apple’s Mail.app, it has some peculiarities mostly because it needs to work in concert with the Cloud app, as well as your other devices such as iPhone and iPad. The first thing I would try is to reinstall macOS. You can do this through Recovery, or by downloading the installer app via the App Store or Terminal. And make sure you up-to-date with your backup(s).
