Need some more information:

1. What exact Mac model is your wife's machine?

2. What exact Mac OS is she using?

3. Any backups to an external device?

What exact MacBook Pro model? And is she running OS 10.11.0, 10.11.1, 10.11.2, 10.11.3, 10.11.4, 10.11.5, or 10.11.6?

Also, no external backup is not good. Backups are critical!
