My iPhone 5C can't get audio in otherwise working headphones

All of a sudden I can't get audio through headphones (any headphones) on my iPhone5C. I can record messages through the microphone but I can't hear (though I can hear my iPod with the same headphones, earbuds etc). This is with and without the case on since sometimes the case is too thick for the jack to stay in. If I turn it up all the way I can hear it VERY faintly in the background. It also works without headphones. Is there a setting that I have wrong or something?

Hello and welcome.

This can be a result of either audio jack failure/damage, AirPlay being enabled, or audio streaming via Bluetooth to another device. Check the AirPlay and Bluetooth settings.

If your headphones don‘t work with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

You could also try to restore the iPhone. As always, ensure you have a backup of your data before performing this.
