I have an old Mac, mid 2015 on high Sierra - it’s recently gone crazy. It keeps saying the disk is full - I deleted over 20gb of data. In the System information section the part that says “HD - xxxx gb available of 500gb” keeps changing, ie it changes from 20 gb and falls down to 120mb within a handful of minutes. Then it goes up again sometimes? What the heck is going on? I ran virus software and it didn’t detect anything.

Hello and welcome.

Sorry for the delayed response.

This can be caused by many things - runaway log files, Google Gmail email sync, Time Machine setup to store backups on the internal drive, etc.
  • Do you have any third-party ultilities like MacKeeper/CleanMyMac/antivirus installed and running?
  • Do you have any Google Gmail accounts setup in Internet Accounts/Mail?
  • How much free space should there be?
