mpg files wont play

I recently converted to a macbook pro 10.6.2 snow leopard and dumped the windows os for my audio and video because the mac is way more stable in my opinion.I have a sony video recorder and when i transfer the file to my mac i cannot play it.The file is an mpg and it seems mac does not support these files.Does any one have any suggestions on any free software that will make them play? I was told to download the free vlc application for mac,id really like a software were i can possible edit cut and do other tasks with the files.Please any suggestions will be great
