Started experiencing this issue at the weekend and at a loss about what to try next.

I had to restart via the power button due to an app freezing up. Since then I get one of the following on start up

1) Flashing folder with question mark
2) Just a white screen with nothing else
3) Apple logo with the loading circle below going around

On all the above the fan goes into overdrive and the laptop warms up quite a bit.

I have swapped the hard drive but I still get the above.

I have tried to access any of the menus on start up but I can't even get to them.

Any bright ideas or is it time for a new mac?

Cheers

Hi Kaveman,

I replaced the hard drive with a previous working one and it still has the issue.

When I try loading from the disc it ejects on power on.

Any other ideas?

what OS version? 10.7? Can you boot holding Option or X and get to Disc Utility? Repair Permissions for starters … or boot holding Shift to start in Safe Boot?
