Macos Recovery

I am assisting someone with a Mac, they are about to return it to their work, and they need to recover their files. They have lost their password, and they cannot reset it. Could they use recovery mode > time machine without a password?

Because of Apple's strict security, that may be a tough process.

• Were they using an employee account from their employer - if so, has it been deactivated?
• Do they have a Time Machine backup on an external drive?
• Which exact model Mac?
• Which version of macOS?
