Macbook Pro hangs a few seconds after booting up

I have a Mac Pro mid-2014 running Big Sur. Only a few seconds after booting up it hangs on the login screen, unresponsive mouse. Or it hangs at 70-80% progress after entering the password. Interestingly it works perfectly in Safe Mode.

After trying a simple reinstall of the OS and that not solving the issue, I have now completely erased the SSD and then reinstalled Big Sur… effectively a fresh install of everything and it’s still hanging after just a few seconds of activating the screen. If I hold the power button down for a sec to put the screen to sleep and wake it up again the mouse is again active, then it freezes again!

I’m fresh out of ideas. Any help appreciated.

Hello and welcome.

Sorry for the delayed response.

It could be any number of things. Since it works in safe mode, it sounds like a software issue. However, since you did a clean install, it maybe a hardware issue that starts when the drivers are loading.

From memory, I recall a failing graphics chip/logic board could cause this.

Have you run Apple Diagnostics?
Have you trued closed lid mode with an external display?
