Macbook help please

Hi all, my first post here. I have what Is the original macbook so it's pretty old. I have loads of pictures on it and to be fair it's just been thrown under the bed, ive since got it out and tried to log on to get the pictures but I couldn't remember the password so I followed a tutorial on how to bypass my old password so I could go on and reset it to something I could remember. Anyway, I entered the said commands as on the video i watched and the computer has gone back to start up stage. Enter country, ect. Like out of the box. This happens on the video I watched also and you pretty much just have to enter your details as a new user...here's the thing, ive got to the startup but my keyboard will not work now, the caps light comes on, the brightness and volume buttons work but nothing else. I can open up the command screen when I turn it on and all the keyboard works fine. Any ideas because the Mrs is going up the wall with me incase we have lost all of our pictures! Thanks for any help
