mac mail

I removed my mail box from mac mail, but unfortunately my all inbox, outbox, sent items etc. are gone. I thought it would be as like outlook, we can remove and reconfigure the mail without losting the mails. but I cannot get my mail box, is there any way to recover my mail box? pls help me if u know about that?

What type of email are you using? POP or IMAP? Did you have any backups?

thank u for ur reply, i forgot to mention that i am using POP, and my os version is 10.3.9
