Mac MAIL app self-starting

My desktop Mac, 21.5 inch, mid-2011, using macOS10.13.6 starts the Mail program (Version 11.5 (3445.9.1)) every few minutes whether I ask it to or not.

I can't find any preference settings which might be causing this. Anybody any clues?

Neither of my other mac devices (MBPro/i-pad/i-phone) using the same Mail accounts does this.

Hmmm...that is strange. So, it will launch the Mail app, even if it is closed?

-Are you clicking any links on web pages that may be mail links?
-Have you tried: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac
-Does it happen when waking from sleep?

Have labelled your four points A thro' D .

A. Yes MAIL self-launches, usually after one or more earlier uses of MAIL but not from Mac [cold] start-up.
B. No.
C. NVRAM/PRAM never used. Wouldn't know how to anyway.
D. Yes. Sometimes while in sleep.
