mac desktop stuck in guest login - asking for password

hi my desktop is stuck in the guest user login, it’s asking for a password and when i enter my normal password it doesn’t work. i am 100% certain this is the correct password. the screen does not allow me to switch user the only other actions i can take are ‘sleep’ ‘restart’ and ‘shut down’ i have tried all three actions multiple times but every time the computer boots up again it takes me back to the same screen... if i’m not mistaken a guest user account shouldn’t even be asking for a password? i need this computer for my school work so any advice is really appreciated

-Which version of OS X/macOS?
-Do you know if FileVault is enabled?
-Have you tried starting up in safe mode?
