LIghtning to sd card reader

Hi,
I'm interested in buying an sd card reader to connect through lightning dock for ipad air and iphone. I've seen some reviews of such a tools on internet, and i would like to hear some advices before buying it, like is it worthwhile? I would like to know is it possible to transfer both ways, from and to sd card and can i copy whole folders with files to device like on windows explorer, not just browse through pictures and videos and copy only them.

-Which version of iOS?
-What types of files are you looking to transfer?

Depending on what types of files, it may be best to sync them via iCloud Drive, as that is exactly one of the reasons it was created.
