For that last 15 years, when I insert a CD, (itunes is open), an import window comes up with songs and checkbox on left with import button on right. Now for first time no window comes up at all and the CD just arrives on the desktop finder. (Mac). Stumped. Thankds.

Hello and welcome.

A few troubleshooting questions:
-Which model Mac?
-Which version of OS X/macOS?
-Which version of iTunes?

Sounds like more of a software issue, since the disc is mounting in Finder.

You coud try the following if you haven't already:
-Eject the disc
-iTunes > Preferences > General > When a CD is inserted: toggle it to Show CD, then back to Ask to Import CD
-Quit iTunes
- > System Preferences...> CDs & DVDs > When you insert a music CD: toggle it to Ignore, then back to Open iTunes
-Restart your Mac
-Try the CD again

Let us know how that goes.

thank Cory, Mojove. itunes 10.9.5.5

Interesting is in General, there is no option about what to do with CD, it's vanished. I remember it used to be there. Here is screenshot;

OK, thanks for the screenshots.

Which exact model MBP or Mac? On those Macs that do not have an optical drive built-in, those options will not show unless there is an optical drive attached. If your Mac does have a built-in optical drive, then they should appear. If not, then there may be something up with the optical drive itself.

Here are some screenshots from a 2016 MacBook Pro with USB-C to USB adapter and MacBook Air USB SuperDrive running Mojave:

Does your Mac mount discs to the Desktop?

Oh, I understand...my bad. I thought you had a MacBook Pro (MBP). Is your Mac an iMac or Mac mini?

The MBP I used in my post/photo captions is the MacBook Pro 2016 I was troubleshooting with. I edited my post above to make it more clear.

27" imac. REboot did not work. Ordering new DVD/ CD player, that's 2nd idea.

But why itunes no longer have the 'what to do when insert cd?"

OK, thanks.

-I assume it is a 27" iMac with a built-in optical drive?
-Do you see CDs & DVDs preference pane in System Preferences?
-Are you ordering an external drive?

Not sure why it would disappear...strange.

Excellent! Glad it is working again.

Yes, the old optical must have had some form of failure.

Be well,
