IPhone SE iOS version 15.6.1

iPhone SE iOS version 15.6.1- my problem is when I am dictating to my phone it will not enter a "." at the end of a sentence, but rather the full word "period" appears. Necessitating backspacing and then inserting a "." Is there any way to just get a "." in response to my voice?

Hi Cory, thanks for getting back to me.
It occurs all the time. It is interesting that you asked about "comma". Often times when I dictate the work "comma" my iPhone will show "karma" - again I have to back space and correct.
I am beginning to wonder if these happenings are a result of my latent New York accent???
Is there another word(s) that I may use to obtain the desired punctuation without back spacing/correcting.
I would not object to re-training my speech to accomplish the desired result.
