iMac freezes on startup

Thanks Cory for stepping in! I never even thought of that.

If the DVD is not the right "kind" (ie, grey ones for another Mac), or OS 10.4.x, might it be best if he purchases the retail OS 10.6.8 DVD, and use that to boot up his iMac?

Correct...a retail Snow Leopard disc would work fine, as long as the hardware itself isn't having issues.
