I just got a new laptop sometime in july, and I have no idea what system it's on.
but on my old computer you could go through different applications and run something that would go through files and fix anything corrupt?

I can't find how to do that but I killed the old computer and I want to kept this one for as long as possible.

So, please help?

If there's an Apple icon in the upper left of the desktop, click it and select "About This Mac" from the drop-down menu.

Have a read and let us know what you find out ... then we can take it from there.

Yep ... 10.4.9 IS Tiger.

Navigate to:

MacintoshHD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disc Utility (or use Spotlight to find it)

When Disc Utility launches, select your Hard Drive in the left pane and click first on repair Permissions and then on repair Hard Drive.

Reboot and see if that helps.:)

When you say "above Macintosh HD" .... not sure where you mean ..... exactly what does it say and where?

Do you mean in the About This Mac window?

Oh yeah, I remember my first time in Disc Utility...it confused me too.

Just select MacintoshHD and take it from there .... :) MacintoshHD is your Macs Startup Disc and the one above is the actual Hard Drive .... it's your Startup Disc you want to check ...

Here's more info if you want to learn a bit more about Disc Utility:

The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
