External Drives Freeze (don't work) with new-ish MacBook Pro

I have a bunch of old (5-10 years) external hard drives (iomega, g-drive) that have been used sparingly and always worked perfectly well. I just discovered that they do not work with my new-ish Macbook Pro (2 years old). When connected (USB), they open very slowly and quickly freeze, freezing the entire Macbook Pro OS as well.

Just for a test, I pulled out an older Macbook Air (2011) and plugged in the hard drives and they work perfectly. What is up with external hard drives and newer Macbook Pros? Is this a common issue? Is there a solution?

Thanks!!!!

Hello and welcome.

-Which model MacBook Pro?
-What version of OS X/macOS?
-Do you have to use an adapter of any kind to connect them to the new MBP?
-What connection type for the old drives - USB/USB 2?
