How do I export a QuickTime at 256 x 144 from Final Cut Express?

I am simply editing some pre made QuickTime movies in Final Cut Express 1. Input from file they are 256x144 format. They seem to import fine (Viewer & Canvas window @100% is 256x144) although the viewer has a large greyed out frame around it. However, after editing, on export they do not fill the frame. If I set the export size at 256x144 I get a black image 256x144 with the moving image just 88x34 sitting in the middle of all that black space. How can I export a frame filling QT at 256x144?
