Hitachi Ext HDD

Hi all.
I'm new to Mac and the forum, but desperately need some guidance. I have an external Hitachi hard drive that will work on a windows pc but when I plug it into my Mac Air, it will mount then unmount and carry on the cycle until I pull it out. I have tried different cables, but this will not even mount the drive, I have formatted to EXFAT and it still does the same. I want to refrain from buying a new hard drive if possible. Anyone else had the same issue. Thanks

Hello and welcome.

-What type of connection - USB?
-What type of enclosure - bus-powered or AC-powered?

Sounds like a possible power issue. The MacBook Air may not have enough USB power to bus-power the drive. Connect the AC adapter for the drive before you connect it to the MBA.

It's bus powered and has no ac power and yes, USB.
