Been doing photography for awhile and know macs are best for editing and image work but just couldn't afford a mac for the longest time. Well my really good buddy has an old mac he doesn't use and is willing to give me. He said he used to watch allot of porn on it when he was younger and that it doesn't work too well anymore. When you turn it on it will work fine for a few minutes then just shut off. I was wondering what you guys think I will need to do to get it to work. I thought about wiping the hard drive and starting over but not sure if this would help or how to exactly go about doing it. Thank you any help is appreciated and sorry if posted this in wrong place.

Yes, Boot off the DVDs that came with it and do a clean install, then under Apple > Software Update, do the updates that show there. There are updates that depend on previous update so keep doing this until the are no more pending.

We need the full specifications of the Mac as this will determine which Install Discs are needed. Then we can help you source them and get you on your way to using the Mac all things being equal.
