external hard drive

My external hard drive sometimes doesn't show on the desktop as expected. It is connected to a USB port. It sometimes shows and other times does not. I disconnect it and reconnect it but to no avail. What gives and how can I make it consistent.

Well, I did the usual thing -- don't forget Occam's Razor. The power plug was partially pulled out!!
