External Hard drive Problems..

I've plugged in an external hard drive into my mac thats been working fine for the last few days. But now it doesn't appear in the desktop or the finder when I plug it in but it DOES appear in Disk Utility. Unfortunately, my impatience led me to unplug it once before I looked at Disk Utility and i got the Device Removal error message. I'm afraid i might of erased the drive and i'm just looking for a solution so it works properly again with the Mac.
