External Hard Drive Problem II

I have read the previous question and answer about problems writing to an external hard disk. The solution to erase and re format, in disk utility, does not work for me as these options are greyed out. Can anyone advise what to do. Thanks

yes found a program on the inernet that allowed me to format a big hard drive in windows in fat32. Amazing the program took only 4 seconds to do it.
