My wife's Macbook Air 2020 laptop was not charging previously. My wife tried out different charging cords and still would not charge. She then rebooted the laptop (it still had some charge in battery) and it never came back to life. I replaced the battery and still no power. I also tried all the resets using the appropriate keys and still no luck.

Other history with this laptop:

1. It would take awhile to start up and sometimes it would boot up and then have a bunch of lines on the screen. She would restart the computer when that happened and it would operate normally.
2. Battery would get very hot and fan would constantly run.
3. I looked at the logic board and do not see any areas that could be a concern (no black marks etc).

Any ideas on what steps to take on determining what the issue is?

Thank you,

Brad

Brad, you have described several symptoms of potentially fatal flaws mostly related to the power management circuit and or perhaps GPU. Now that the device is effectively dead it's really a job for a technician to determine the actual faulty circuitry. Apple would not even bother to do that, they would replace an entire circuit board and charge you accordingly but, as I assume you're out of warrenty an independent repairer is really your only choice. Honestly at 4 nearly 5 years old it may not be worth the cost.

You might consider an Apple reconditioned model or a new but earlier model ie. An Intel model if you are not concerned about Apple Intelligence. I'm sure a lot of people will be selling perfectly good 2020 Intel MacBooks just to upgrade to the Mx (silicon) models now on Amazon ect.

What did you end up doing? I’m actually in a similar situation with my MacBook Air 2015. It’s been serving me well, but lately, it’s starting to show its age, and I’ve been running into more performance issues. I’ve started looking into mac of all trades to see if they might have any options, either for repairs or possibly refurbished models. I’m still not sure whether I should bite the bullet and get a new computer or try to get more life out of my current one. It’s a tough decision because I don’t want to spend more money than necessary, but at the same time, I need something reliable for work and personal use
