I'm buying a new IMac and want to connect my pre-Thunderbolt (plain USB) 2TB HD. What type of connection cord do I need?

It would be best if you provide the following information:

1. The exact iMac model you will be purchasing.

2. The exact specifics of your external drive.

The IMac is a iMac8,1, purchased in 2011 and the HD is a 3TB My Book Studio, purchased in 2012. Both use the model of USB used back then.

OK, you just need a USB cable. The iMac has USB 2.0 ports, and the 3TB My Book Studio HDD has a USB 3.0 port. Transfer rates will be at USB 2.0 speeds.

Hello and welcome.

Yes, that's an iMac (Early 2008) which does indeed have 3 USB 2.0 ports.
