Bought new MacBook Air, now mail will not stay open

I just got my new MacBook Air, used Migration Assistant to transfer files. When I open Mail it immediately says "mail unexpectedly quit" then I press re open, and also send report but nothing happens. I can still get Mail on my old laptop. I also note that Facetime seems to be devoid of all my contacts from my old MacBook Air. Catalina was the OS on the old laptop. Now it is Sonoma on the new one.
