Wifi List Freezing

I'm having an issue with my wifi on my toolbar. Everytime I click on the symbol to connect it'll open up the surrounding networks and freeze before I get a chance to click on my network. Then it'll continue to freeze on the monitor for an undetermined amount of time. I can activate all other icons/ the apple symbol/everything but the wifi. I can't even force quit it because it's part of the toolbar. Does anyone know why this is happening? It's super frustrating when I can't connect to the internet as well as having to access apps with half my monitor being taken up by this frozen component.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Do you have any 3rd Party Menu Bar additions?

Hi,

To add to what Kaveman has asked, are you running Lion or Mountain Lion?
Also when this happens let the beach ball keep spinning and check your Activity Monitor see if there is a process called " SystemUIServer" if so note what % of your CPU it is using, and post back.
