what default app to use

i got my e mac from a friend and have never used one before i am having problems installing anything i try to install anything
when trying to open gmail instlaller it says there is no default applaction specifed to open the document and then wants to to chose i have no idea what to chose
it does this with everything i try to install plz help!!

On the download page for gmail...does it say it is a Mac version or PC ?

According to this, you need Mac 10.4 and higher to run this app. You have 10.3.9.
