So I have a bunch of xml files with the extension .vml that are used in an application called Vault of Darkness. It's an application I got online and OSX doesn't recognize it as a valid way to open .vml files (It's not enabled when "Recommended applications" is selected under the "Open With" search box). It chooses Excel for Mac every time. I can manually change each file one-by-one, but if I try to select the "Change All" option in the File Info window, it changed it from Vault of Darkness back to Excel. Is there a way to get this to use the right application and stick with it? I'm on OSX 10.10.5.

Hello and welcome.

It should work to change the default app to Vault of Darkness.

Is this how you are attempting to change it:
1. Right-click/Option-click on a .vml file and choose Get Info
2. Click disclosure triangle in Open with: section
3. Click on application name (probably Microsoft Excel (default) currently) to expand drop-down list
4. Choose Other... from the bottom of the list
5. Change Enable: Recommended Applications to All Applications
6. Click Vault of Darkness to select
7. Click Always Open With box
8. Click Add button
9. Click Change All... button and click Continue

Open with: should now show Vault of Darkness (default) for all .vml files.

Let us know if that works,

C
