Hello and welcome.
  • Which model Mac?
  • Which version of macOS?
  • Do you have a current Time Machine or other backup of your data?
Normally, that means the macOS install has been corrupted somehow and it needs to be reinstalled. You should be able to perform a reinstall over the top of your current install.
