Volume and brightness controls indicators not working

I have a MacBook M1 running Monterey v12.1

When using the buttons along the top of the keyboard to increase / decrease volume or brightness, neither display shows the white dots indicating the degree of adjustment -- there is just a black line with nothing showing. The controls still do their thing, it's just that the display doesn't show.
I noticed this quite recently but it could have been like that for months. I can't pin the problem to a particular update.

Have you tried updating to the latest macOS Monterey 12.2.1?

Thanks for your suggestion. I have updated, though I first noticed the problem well before Monterey came along. It's still bugging me!
