USB multiple connection to printer

I am trying to make a (simple) USB connection between my G4 tower (OS 10.3.9) and my Canon MP510 printer via a hub. My Intel imac (OS 10.4.11) is connected to this printer via the hub and works perfectly. Both macs are loaded with the same Canon drivers. The G4 just cannot 'see' the printer at all. Can anyone help please?
