After 8 months of working 100%, my Mac Pro 3,1 started to malfunction. It went into a boot loop. Switch on, startup chime, Apple logo comes up, progress bar gets to around 50% then black screen and restarts.
I took out the RAM risers and then the RAM chips cleaned the contacts and reseated, no change.
Took out the processors, reseated them and reapplied thermal paste.
Took out all the drives and tried the boot drive in each bay, no change.
Used my Mac Pro 6,1 to make another fresh boot disk, no change.
NVRAM reset, no change.
New PRAM battery, no change.
By this time I was getting a nagging feeling that the GPU was faulty, so I setup a new boot disk on my 6,1, with file sharing and screen sharing enabled, took out the GPU and booted up, startup chime OK, clicked on 'Connect to Server' and 'Browse' and the 3,1 was there, vnc'd to the 3,1 perfect.
Now on the lookout for a replacement GPU.
a frustrating time at the beginning, but very satisfying when the solution is found.
