Time Machine is full. how can I delete contents prior to a back up?

Time Machine is almost full. How can I delete the contents of Time Machine prior to making a back up of everything on my iMac (OS 10.7.5)? I should have added that T Machine is linked to an external hard drive 500 Gb in capacity.

TimeMachine does it automatically. But we always buy a bigger one and keep going.
