System-wide Font issue (Characters not appearing!)

Mac OS X 10.4.10 - 15"MacBook Pro

I'm having a (possibly) system wide problem with fonts. Certain charactes do not appear at all. For example, in the Airport dropdown menu, certain characters, like "I" or "o" don't appear. This doesn't always happen, but sometimes it does. It happens most often in Firefox and Safari, but I've also seen it occur in iChat and the Airport dropdown menu. Attached is an image of the Firefox download window. Notice the missing characters?
