Synching iPod Touch with PC

When I try to synch my ipod touch or iphone with my PC, it looks like everything is working. The ipod touch says 'Synch in Progress' and the PC in iTunes says 'Synching <name> ipod step 1 of 4'; and that's where they both stay. I've even left them synching overnight and it still hasn't completed the next morning. Sometimes there will be an error message that indicates the synching stopped because the ipod wasn't able to be backed up to the PC.
Any thoughts?
