suddenly won't play videos online?

so I normally watch videos like youtube and they work, but as of last night, my computer won't play any sort of video from sites I've tried. the video comes up and it's just a blank black screen in place of where the video picture should be, the control buttons don't even show up. Why is it doing this and how do I fix it? I'm using Safari for my internet and I'm on an ethernet connection. Thanks!!!
