email suddenly won't go out - update issue?

try to send email, now suddenly getting "cannot send message using server", SMTP connection to server failed.
I'm running the Yosemite upgrade, I think there was an update today. All was fine with password but now I can't send.
ISP says it's an update issue.
Can anyone here help?

Whenever I see this its always been a temporary thing.

Try quitting/relaunching Mail.app or rebooting, if the issue does persist.

I have and it does.
In fact, that was the first thing that popped up when I rebooted - connection to SMTP failed.

Spoke with someone at "Beyond Tech Support" for Eastlink (Canada) and the problem has been fixed. Would love to tell exactly what he did, and should someone want to know, I'll go into the unseen details to find out & tell.
