Start up screen problem

We just purchased a new iMac. Love it. But, we each have a user account. When my husband logs in to his, the mac hard drive automatically opens on the screen. It is NOT set to open in the preferences "start up" section. How can we stop this ?

Not sure what you mean, a new Finder window displaying the HD?
When you log out or shut down and leave a finder window open it will open that window the next time you log in.
I do not have Snow Leopard v. 10.6 so I can not be sure if that is the way it still acts or not.
